1. Personal Background: David Noton is a photographer born in 1957 in Bedfordshire, UK. He is 66 years old, and has traveled the world for 24 years taking photos. He most famously traveled around the British isles where he developed his passion. While he was traveling he developed a huge interest in the art of photography. He started it as a way to document his travels, but it grew on him, and became his biggest passion. Even today he is driven to take photos when he sees the beautiful lighting and landscapes of the UK. He is a pretty independent person, as he traveled for all those years by himself. He worked for several magazines, and has won the Wildlife photographer of the year award 3 times. One of his most important things was that he wrote a book called “Waiting for the light.” He says that spending that time in Canada from ages 6-12 was life-changing, and the beauty of Canada inspired him into wanting to become a photographer. Lastly, he served in the British Merchant Navy for 3 years, and that is when he started taking photos.
Name of Artist: David Noton
Dates of Artist’s Life: Born in 1957, moved to Canada 1965, back to England 1971
2. Style: He is a landscape photographer and considered one of the best landscape photographers ever. One of the most recurring themes in his photography is that he takes most of his photos either at dawn or at dusk. He said “He hopes to take photos of the worlds most fragile and beautiful landscapes. Most of his photos are of the mountains, and usually with a lake in font of them. Something noticeable is how isolated each of his photos seem, and show how far away he traveled and his solidarity. This also shows his passion for finding beautiful landscapes, as these are all photos that you do not see other photographers take.
3. Philosophy: He believes that the beauty of the image comes from the subject, not any of his filters or photography taking skills. He also believes that there is an aspect of love and homeliness in every photo, for example he feels like some of his photos taken 5 minutes from his house are better then some photos taken in the most beautiful places in the world. He also believes that being independent for a significant amount of time is good for you, and believes that everyone should travel the world at some point.
4. Influences: Pictures of mountains and lakes are now my favorite type of photo, and looking at landscape photography when I was younger, has led to me taking hundreds of photos with mountains and water in them. I also now edit photos in his way whenever I edit photos, where he makes them dark in some parts while light in the point of emphasis. Lastly, I love his philosophy of how being independent can be healthy, since it is often viewed that being independent is not smart, however he inputs an interesting aspect on that matter.

This photo was easy and hard in different ways. I already have lots of rocks that I have collected over the years, and the rocks have lots of variety. However, it is very difficult/impossible to have the exact same rocks. Also it is hard to get natural lighting that will not be super sunny on a sunny day, so I had to edit the photo to look a little bit more like its by the ocean. I like how the rocks look like they have just been hit by a wave and rolled over, even though this was taken in Ann Arbor Michigan.
This photo was hilarious to take. This is a photo of the orchid flower, but it looks very similar to a Guaria morada which is Costa Rica's national flower. My mom is from Costa Rica so she quickly rushed to our living room and got a Guaria Blanca(same thing just white) and I took a photo of it. When I told her it was actually just a orchid flower it was very funny, but there are no purple flowers in winter unless I got a fake one so I just use this. You can see some purple in mine if you look closely at the center though.

This is one of Noton's most famous pieces so it was definently hard to replicate. I thought 2 things, do I look for a tree that looks similar, or do I go into the woods and look for similar lighting and back ground. I first went into the woods but after walking for 10 minutes, all the trees were tall and skinny. The lighting was very similar but the trees were so different this would be a complete joke. So I went to a more open area on the hill and found this tree that looks very similar in my opinion. You obviously cannot beat the lighting and spookiness of that spectacular Noton masterpiece, but I would like to think that the trees look at least pretty similar

I really enjoyed taking these photos, and I found it quite satisfying to hunt for something that I know I am looking for. I had quite the adventure taking these, so it is nice be done even though it was fun. I believe that each of these photos represents a beautiful aspect of life. I would say that the rock one shows that even when times are rough, you can still find beauty anywhere you look. The flower one represents all the beauty of life, and I like how it looks like the flower is reaching out to help someone up. The Tree one shows that even when you are scared, you can still find something spectacular if you let go of your fears. I also feel like each branch could represents different choices in your life, they all lead somewhere different even though they start from the same place.
